Discover La Margarita Restaurant And Grill

Walking into La Margarita Restaurant And Grill feels like stepping into a familiar neighborhood spot where the energy is relaxed and the food does the talking. I stopped by on a busy weekday evening at 545 Ferry St SE, Salem, OR 97301, United States, and the place was buzzing with locals, families, and a couple of regulars who clearly knew the staff by name. That kind of atmosphere usually says more than any sign on the door.

From personal experience, the menu reads like a tour through classic Mexican comfort food with a few modern twists. I watched a server explain dishes to a first-time guest, breaking down the difference between enchilada sauces and how the grill is used to finish certain meats. That attention to detail matters. When I ordered the carne asada, it arrived sizzling, with a smoky aroma that made it clear the grill wasn’t just decorative. The steak was marinated, grilled over high heat, then rested properly before slicing, which is why it stayed juicy instead of tough. This is a real, everyday cooking process done right, not a shortcut.

What stands out is consistency. A friend of mine who lives nearby eats here at least twice a month and swears the portions and flavors never change. That lines up with what restaurant research often highlights. According to data from the National Restaurant Association, consistency is one of the top three factors influencing repeat visits, right alongside service and cleanliness. You can feel that philosophy in how the kitchen operates, especially during peak hours when orders are flying out.

The menu offers the expected tacos, burritos, and fajitas, but it’s the small details that elevate the experience. Rice isn’t bland filler; it’s seasoned and fluffy. Beans are creamy, not watery. Even the house salsa has depth, balancing acidity and heat without overwhelming your palate. One diner at the next table described it as fresh and balanced, and that phrase stuck with me because it’s accurate without trying too hard.

Reviews around town tend to echo similar themes. Many mention friendly service and generous portions, which I also noticed. Our server checked in just enough to be helpful without hovering, and when we asked about spice levels, she gave honest guidance instead of the usual vague answers. That kind of transparency builds trust, especially for people who may be sensitive to heat.

From a health and safety standpoint, the restaurant appears well-managed. The CDC emphasizes proper food handling and temperature control as key to preventing foodborne illness, and you can see those practices in action here. Hot dishes arrive hot, cold items stay cold, and the dining area stays clean even during rushes. While I didn’t tour the kitchen, the visible cues suggest a team that follows established standards.

There are a few limitations worth noting. Parking can be tight during dinner hours, and on especially busy nights, waits can stretch longer than expected. That said, most regulars seem to accept this as part of the experience, especially since the food quality holds up even when the dining room is full.

Overall, this spot works because it understands what diners want: reliable flavors, a welcoming environment, and food that feels made with care. It’s not trying to reinvent Mexican cuisine, and that’s exactly why it succeeds. Whether you’re checking out locations around Salem or skimming reviews before deciding where to eat, this restaurant earns its reputation through everyday execution rather than flashy promises.

  • I was on the search for margarita flights, and that's how I came upon La Margarita. I thought the flight was cute, and I loved that you were able to choose the flavors you wanted. Of course, it feels like you drown them in three sips, but I still had fun! As for the food, I must admit that La Margarita had pretty good food. The enchiladas suizas weren't what I thought I was ordering, but I was pleasantly surprised and ended up loving them. They were creamy, cheesy, and had bits of chicken in them. The rice was also nice and fluffy. My friend was also generous enough to share her flautas with me, and it was perfectly crisp and generously filled with soft and juicy chicken. I really liked those, too. Overall, I can see myself going back. It was a good meal!

  • La Margarita is one of our favorite places to eat. We enjoy the family friendly atmosphere, great wait staff and outstanding food. With our last outing I was expecting the price of the food to rise but was surprised the bill at the end of the night was much lower than I expected. Thanks for being amazing, see you again soon.

  • Went to dinner here last night and it was great. The place was as busy as it could get so we had to wait about 10min for a table. They sat us upstairs in what feels like a more private booth, we ordered the tapatia margarita & a cantarito margarita. Both were really good!! We ordered an extra tapatia which I believe is their own housemade mix. Food was also good
